Sneaky villain lurking in the shadows! 🕵️♂️
This cartoon character design art is a parodic nod to classic noir / gangster hollywood tropes (as well as from cartoons from The Golden Age of Animation with influence from Ren & Stimpy, Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera, etc ).
I’m Erica Crooks (she/her) and I’ve been building puppets, puppeteering and making independent puppet short films for over two decades. A little over 27 years now.
My latest puppet building experiment is a homage to the "creepy caricature" aesthetic.
It’s strongly inspired by the grotesque, satirical puppet legends of early Spitting Image and Les Guignols puppet caricature styles as well as The Muppets.

Here is a cartoon character art that I drew last year.
Looks like they have some sort of sidekick job and made some kind of mistake, telling by their nervous smile. I wonder what they’ve been up to wearing that coat or perhaps that’s just their style.
In recent years, I’ve been experimenting with traditional illustration. In this example, colored pencils and pen ink.
Even though technology is great for art, there’s also something interesting about the traditional drawing organic feel.
